The ECD Global Alliance (ECDGA), a non-profit dedicated to supporting people affected by an ultra-rare blood cancer known as Erdheim-Chester Disease (ECD), honors deserving volunteers during National Volunteer Week. ECDGA volunteers are the life force of the organization, supporting its small staff and contributing more than 2,000 hours of service to numerous programs and supportive tasks.
National Volunteer Week is an opportunity for the entire community to express gratitude for those serving the patients and families affected by ECD. It gives members a chance to see who is working behind the scenes, helping them to get the support and information they deserve. It is hoped that the ECDGA members are uplifted and encouraged by the knowledge that there is a great group of volunteers fighting for them every day.
The ECDGA has depended on volunteers since its inception in 2008 to keep the administrative overhead to a minimum, maximizing donation dollars. ECD patients, caregivers, their families and friends, and medical professionals make up the Alliance’s generous workforce. Contributors help with single projects or once a year, while others help on a more consistent basis. Volunteer tasks range from raising awareness to financial tracking and filing, fundraising, providing special-skill services, and supporting other members. The work performed by dedicated volunteers supports the ECDGA’s members and ECD patients all over the world.
Medical professionals have also supported the ECDGA by offering expertise and knowledge, raising awareness, and participating in patient-care projects the organization facilitates and executes. The non-profit can support hundreds of people from around the globe, and this is credited to the contributions made by many medical professionals and member volunteers.
Volunteerism benefits the ECDGA, but it also has a positive impact on the volunteers, allowing them many benefits that affect them in work and life.
